Perennial
Seed Germination: 60 day cold stratification
Sun: Full - Partial
Water: Medium
Height: 4-10 ft
Spacing: 2-3 ft
Bloom: June-Oct

  • Berries are an important food source for birds

  • Tolerant of most soil conditions

  • Brightly colored and “exotic”-looking

  • Long bloom period

  • Berries can be used to create natural dyes and inks

NOTE: All parts of the plant are poisonous to humans when eaten. Young leaves of the pokeweed plant were commonly eaten during the Great Depression but require very specific cooking practices to be safe.

Pokeweed also grows vigorously and may not be ideal for small landscapes. However, its ability to grow in disturbed areas makes it great for seed bombing or for planting in areas that have trouble growing plants.

Compared to foreign plants, native plants:

  • Require less maintenance

  • Use less water

  • Are more beneficial to native wildlife

  • Sequester more atmospheric carbon (that means they help fight climate change!)
